Using Human Design as an Empath
If you've ever felt like you're caught in a storm of feelings that aren't even yours, welcome to the empath experience. You're not imagining it. You're not broken. And no, you're not losing your mind.
This week's video dives deep into the murky waters of unconscious empathy, that wild, disorienting experience of absorbing other people’s emotions and mistaking them for your own. It’s like being on an emotional rollercoaster you never bought a ticket for. The highs, the lows, the gut drops? All real. But what if I told you there was a way to stay grounded, even while the storm rages on?
Ever feel like you're being pulled by invisible strings of other people’s emotions? This video dives deep into what it really means to be an empath—and how to stop being an emotional puppet and start surfing the waves like a pro.
Tired of Being an Emotional Puppet? I USE Human Design to help me Surf the Waves.
In Human Design, an open or undefined emotional solar plexus is often the culprit behind this empathic overwhelm. It doesn't just make you sensitive; it turns you into an amplifier. You're feeling other people’s emotional waves louder than they are. If you don't know what's happening, it's easy to collapse into those emotions and lose sight of your own center. We call that "unconscious empathy." And it's exhausting.
But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be that way.
As I share in the video, learning to hold emotional energy without merging with it has been one of the most liberating parts of my journey. It’s like going from being a puppet pulled by invisible strings to becoming a surfer—aware of the waves, but riding them with skill instead of being swallowed whole.
Empaths serve a powerful purpose. When we stop collapsing and start observing, we become mirrors. Tuning forks. Pressure valves. We help emotionally defined people see themselves more clearly. And when done consciously, that’s not just sensitivity—that’s sacred service.
We also talk about the confusion that happens when you’re both an empath and a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Many HSPs think they're empaths because of how overwhelmed they feel—but it’s not always the same thing. If you've got multiple open centers in your Human Design chart, your sensitivity might be energetic, sensory, emotional, or all of the above. Sorting through the chaos means tracking your patterns, journaling emotional triggers, and learning to discern what’s yours versus what you’ve picked up.
I always say: keep a journal. Make a note when you feel emotionally off, especially around certain people or environments. Later, after decompressing, check in: does that emotion still feel like yours? Or did it evaporate with distance? That right there is data. And the more you track, the more clarity you gain.
This journey is a process. It takes patience, practice, and a willingness to feel a little ridiculous while you figure it out. But it leads somewhere beautiful.
Because in order to know who you are, you have to know who you’re not.
If you’re just starting out on your empath journey, or if you’re deep in the emotional trenches wondering if you’ll ever find calm, this blog (and the video that inspired it) is your reminder that you’re not alone. You’re not cursed. You’re learning how to ride the waves.
You got this. And I’m right there with you.
